Introduction
It might sound like Hollywood fiction, but money laundering is a serious and constant threat to businesses all over the world. A 2007 report states that more than 1 trillion US dollars (£502,000 billion) is laundered globally each year by drug dealers, arms traffickers and other criminals. Statistics show that British businesses are targeted by money launderers between 5 and 20 times per year.
Anti-Money Laundering legislation, such as The Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and Money Laundering Regulations 2003, place significant responsibilities on businesses to prevent the crime of money laundering. The law can also impose damaging penalties if businesses do not introduce satisfactory procedures to tackle the problem.
Anti-Money Laundering is an ideal introduction to the crime of money laundering. It outlines the three stages of the money laundering process and the different techniques used by criminals to hide the illegal origins of money. It will help managers to put in place a series of practical measures to help prevent, report and combat the problem.
